Death Note, an anime series about a kid who finds a book that possesses the power to kill anyone whose name is written inside, is getting a live-action makeover! The best part: Willem Dafoe is the voice of Ryuk, the beyond demented-looking death spirit whose Glasgow smile trumps The Joker’s, tenfold.
The series contains some very probing themes, one being the morality of doubling for an all-powerful celestial force and wiping out the “bad guys.”
With regard to the film’s aesthetic, the addition of Dafoe (and that voice of his) is very promising; the man has the ability to make a diaper commercial sound sinister, so while this piece isn’t necessarily a horror film in the classical sense, the trailer presents it as ever so close to one.
It will debut August 25th.
